Originally a classical pianist from Kamloops Canada, Marcella Barz shifted her focus to complete a Bachelor of Music in clarinet performance at the University of Victoria (Canada) before moving to Ireland. In 2012, she won a concerto competition and appeared onstage as soloist with the Kamloops Symphony Orchestra. Marcella has performed with the Symphony Orchestra Academy of the Pacific, the Thompson Valley Orchestra, the Kamloops Symphony Orchestra, the National Youth Band of Canada, and the North American High School Band Honors Performance Series at Carnegie Hall. At the University of Victoria she was the concertmaster of the Wind Symphony for three consecutive years.
Currently in Dublin, Marcella is finishing her Master of Music degree in bass clarinet and clarinet performance, studying with Dr. Paul Roe at the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT). Marcella has been specializing in contemporary classical music and has developed an interest in works for bass clarinet and electronics and other mixed media. This year, she has enjoyed performing Irish compositions for the clarinet and bass clarinet, and recently commissioned a new piece for bass clarinet and electronics by the Canadian composer Zachary W. Smith. An enthusiastic chamber musician, Marcella has performed with many chamber groups and most recently won the Senior Chamber Music Competition at DIT with fellow clarinetist Dina Ryan.
